Cobra Kai Martial Arts was established in Victorville, California on March 8, 2008, long before the drama web television series by the same name premiered on YouTube Red. The name Cobra Kai can be traced back to Marc Laimon, a renowned BJJ Black Belt and famous instructor who opened his gym in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2004. In those days the American BJJ Black Belts where shown little appreciation and given no respect at the tournaments by the Jiu Jitsu community which was primely Brazilian. Also some of his student's, like Joe Stevenson, were pioneering the sport of MMA which many traditional martial arts looked down upon disapprovingly.
As the story goes while having dinner March and some close friends were discussing what he should call his new gym. Someone said, "Well, no seems to like and were every we go everyone looks at us like we are the bad guys from Cobra Kai." Marc loved the idea, as did everyone else; he was able to trademark the name and thus Cobra Kai Jiu Jitsu Academy was born. Latter as his student's went on to start their own schools our of respect for their instructor and traditions they carried the name with them to their gyms, all with Marc Laimon's blessing.

The origin of Cobra Kai Martial Arts in Victorville California dates back to the days when its founder, Joe “Daddy” Stevenson was still a rising star in the UFC. Joe has always been a talented fighter and dedicated athlete who quickly gained a reputation for his skill and tenacity inside the cage; however, regardless of his success and fame he never forgot his roots, or the struggles he faced as a young man growing up in the High Desert.
Feeling a deep sense of responsibility to give back to his community and to help others, Joe decided to put his fame and success to good use by starting Cobra Kai Martial Arts. From the beginning, the goal was simple: to create a safe and welcoming environment where families could come together, kids could learn valuable life lessons, and everyone could grow both physically and mentally.
Joe envisioned Cobra Kai Martial Arts as a place where anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background, could come to learn the martial arts and develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in life. His desire was, and still is today, to instill in his students the same discipline, focus, and respect that he had learned through his own training and experiences in the UFC.
Today, Joe and his team of specialized instructors at Cobra Kai Martial Arts are dedicated to fostering human character through the practice of martial arts, focusing on unlocking each individual’s full potential, fortifying family ties, and offering a supportive community to those without one. As a result of their efforts Cobra Kai Martial Arts has earned the reputation as the primer martial arts gym in the High Desert, producing more amateur and professional fighters than any other martial arts facility in the area. Thanks to his tireless mentorship, Joe is realizing his dream, using his gym to positively impact people’s lives and better his community.
