Muay Thai

Muay Thai is by far the most effective striking art in the world, and the national sport of Thailand. What sets Muay Thai apart from other martial arts is its emphasis on what actually works in a fight. Also known as "The Art of Eight Limbs" or "The Science of Eight Venoms," Muay Thai teaches a person how to deliver devastating strikes with the fists, elbows, knees and shins; training focuses on developing power, accuracy, and proper timing through sparring, and lots of heavy bag and pad work. Recognized internationally for its tremendous power, maximum efficiency and raw simplicity, Muay Thai is the preferred striking art of most MMA fighters

Whether you want to get into incredible shape, develop self-confidence, or fight in the ring, Muay Thai is a martial art that is inclusive of multiple goals. Bottom-line is there are many good reasons for getting started in Muay Thai, and no wrong ones.

Brief History
Developed over hundreds of years ago, the origins of Muay Thai can be traced to the middle of the 18th Century. According to legend, between 1767 and 1774, during the battles between the Burmese and Siam (Thailand), a famous fighter, Nai Khanom Tom, was taken prisoner with a thousand other Siamese warriors when the Burmese invaded the Ayutthaya Kingdom. At a festival held in honor of this great victory, the Burmese King Mangra wanted to see if the fighting style of the Siamese, known as Muay Boran, was equal to the fighting style of the Burmese. The King selected his champion and the Siamese selected Nai Khanom Tom as their champion.

After Nai Khanom Tom performed the ritual dance, Wai Kru, which the Burmese thought was some sort of Thai black magic, Nai Khanom fought the Burmese champion and won by Knock Out. The referee claimed the win not valid because the Burmese champion was distracted by the Wai Kru dance and declared it is was some kind of sorcery. The King then sent another 9 champion fighters to face Nai Khanom Tom, one by one without any time breaks between the fights, Nai Khanom Tom defeated each fighter. So impressed by the abilities of Nai Khanom Tom, the King Mangra granted him his freedom saying, “Every part of this Siamese is blessed with venom.”

Today Nai Khanom Tom is considered the father of Muay Thai and he is hailed as a national hero. Every year he is celebrated on March 17, known as “Nai Khanom Tom Day,” of “Muay Thai Day.” Young Thai fighters are taught that Nai Khanom Tom fought for the freedom of his people, his country, his family and friends. They are encouraged to immolate his fighting spirit and the traditional values of Muay Thai.
